Bicycle(R) Cinder Playing Cards

An ordinary deck with a long history of meaning

Playing Cards

Playing cards have long been used for more than games. Across Europe, especially from the 18th century onward, standard decks became a practical alternative to tarot cards for fortune-telling and informal divination. Because they were common and easy to carry, they allowed people to practice card reading without drawing attention.

In cartomancy (card divination), each suit is often associated with everyday themes:

  • Hearts relate to emotions, relationships, and home life
  • Spades are linked to challenges, conflict, or change
  • Clubs represent work, effort, and action
  • Diamonds are tied to money, communication, and practical matters

Rather than casting spells, playing cards are typically used as a reflective tool—helping people think through situations, notice patterns, or make decisions. A reading might involve drawing a few cards and interpreting them based on their traditional meanings and position.

In this sense, the “magic” of playing cards is less about supernatural power and more about intuition, symbolism, and perspective—turning an ordinary deck into a simple but meaningful tool for insight.
